Hello - - from Islamabad, Pakistan - COMING HOME!

COMING HOME from Pakistan! :) . . . a total of 495 days, 70+ weeks, 16+ months!

Yes, we are coming home . . . Marina Grace has been granted a 2 year Humanitarian Parole by USCIS! Simply put . . . our MIRACLE!

Due to all the complex legal issues, it has been a while since our last update . . . so, below is an update on the "rest" of our story here in Pakistan . . .

September - We filed an official I-290B Appeal for the I-600 Orphan Status Denial. An applicant has only 30 days from the date of denial to file the appeal, but can ask for an additional 30 days to follow up with an additional legal brief & evidence dossier, which we have done. I have also retained new legal counsel, Poarch Law, an immigration law firm in the Washington, D.C. area. Christine Poarch has taken on our case & we are hopeful that the new legal brief & evidence dossier can be pulled together quickly, since we have only 30 days to complete it (mid Oct). We have also contacted the adoption advocacy organization EACH (Equity for Adopted Children) to help with our plight with USCIS. We are hopeful that McLane Layton (founder of EACH) will be able to advocate Gracy's case personally with USCIS.

October - After a frantic month of working with new immigration/intercountry adoption attorneys, the I-290B Appeal Legal Brief & New Evidence Dossier is complete! It was a whirlwind month of late nights in Paksitan, connecting with attorneys via skype, pulling together all the details necessary for a new evidence dossier. This new Legal Brief/Evidence Dossier is MASSIVE (~ 150 pages long)! No, it is not "light reading!" lol! Christine/McLane have done a very thorough job in pulling the details together. All we can do now is WAIT! It will need to go through a 1st review with the local USCIS office of jurisdiction (New Delhi, India), we are hoping the appeal review will be completed by Christmas/year-end. It would be wonderful if we could be HOME for Christmas, but I'm not holding my breath . . . !

In the meantime, we have also made the decision to go ahead & move forward with an application for Humanitarian Parole for medical care. Hopefully this can be filed within 4-6 weeks. This is very much a "long shot" - the normal process for an HP is to exhaust ALL other options 1st .. . . before filing an application for HP. Since we technically have a "pending" immigrant visa thru our appeal, this is a long shot & I'm told will probably be considered by USCIS to have the motive of "circumventing US law" or entering the US & then MG simply staying! However, if we wait & file the HP after the appeal's decision, it could be 2 years from now . . . Gracy simply doesn't have that kind of time, considering her health issues. So, we are going to go ahead & file the HP application now & then . . . pray, pray, pray that God's hand will lead the way!

It is also time for "another" visa extension for Mama (#6) - application was made for a 6 month visa. it will be 4 weeks before we know if it will be granted. I'm hoping for at least 3 months, which would take me to the end of the year . . . could we be home by then????

November - Still working on the HP application dossier. Medical expert opinions are slow to come in & the holidays are fast approaching. No chance for a year-end return home :(. We are hoping for a mid Dec HP file date - Pray we can get everything pulled together before the Christmas/New Year holidays!

Gracy & Mama did have a very nice Thanksgiving in Islamabad. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the Serena Hotel (only place we could find that served turkey!) . . . Gracy's 1st taste of turkey! She loved it!

Mama is getting very "blue" thinking of the up-coming holidays without my Nicky-boy! I'll miss his 9th birthday along with Christmas with my little guy . . . the tears fall easily when I think about it. :(

December - Surprise, surprise . . . Papa Karim & Shelina made a MIRACLE happen . . . with some strategically placed influence, the Pakistani Ministry of Interior granted me a visa extension with a "1x re-entry" to Pakistan from the US. What this means . . . I can leave & re-enter Pakistan under my current visa . . . aka . . . I can come home for Nicky's birthday & Christmas & New Year's!!! YEAH! I'm thrilled . . . but on the other hand very sad, I will have to leave Gracy here in Pakistan. She will be under the care of a live-in nanny that Papa Karim & I have searched high-n-low for. It has been a very quick process to find someone, but I also know that Papa Karim will have a watchful eye on our Gracy Girl!!! We will skype everyday . . . from the flip side (can my life get any more complicated???)

I didn't tell Nicky or my family I was coming home for Christmas . . . didn't want to get hopes up should it not work out, but it did! I surprised my sister in Austin. Yep, just showed up at her door step on 12/7/11! She was speechless & I almost had to pick her up off the floor! It was GREAT!!! I spent a day with sis & then flew into Tulsa to surprise Nicky!!! When Dalend opened the door . . . just a speechless stare for several seconds, then Nicky popped his head around & I heard "Mama, you're home!" Yes, tears! I just want to say "Thank You" to Laura (Austin) & Jan (Tulsa) for meeting me at the airport & more importantly, keeping my special Christmas "secret"!

The 5 weeks home were a whirlwind . . . so much to do, so little time! Loving on my Nicky, Piano recital, Christmas programs, birthday, Christmas, basketball, baseball, football, friends to "catch up" with, places to go & people to see (3 different legislative offices to share Gracy's story & try to gain momentum fpr the HP).

We were able to complete the HP dossier & submit the application by mid Dec, right before Christmas . . . Now, the wait . . . !

The days fly by & before I know it, it's time to travel back to Pakistan on my miraculous visa re-entry!

January 2012 - Back in Pakistan & loving on my Gracy Girl! She is now sporting a very interesting "bangs" haircut! Somehow that happened while Mama was gone . . . hair grows! :) Skype worked very well, everyday & Gracy was running to Mama with open arms! I'm missing my boy, though . . . but maybe the HP has a chance, maybe soon we will be making plans to fly home to the US, maybe soon . . . ?

mid Jan - our HP application has been rejected & kicked back due to an "administrative" error. The I-131 form has been revised & corrected, resubmitted late Jan.

It is cooolllddd in Islamabad. The only heat we have is from a small floor heater & it just isn't very safe around a 2 year old . . . so I decided to not use it. Mama has brought back a whopper of a cold from the US. It has spread like wild fire through the g.house. Gracy, Papa & staff . . . Uggghhh! we are all cranky!

We are living through the "wait" on both the Appeal & HP. After 90 days from our Appeal legal brief + evidence filing (it has actually been 120 days since the I-290B appeal filing, but what's another month after this long?), we have not heard a "peep" from New Delhi on the Appeal review. We are beginning to seriously question the "why" of New Delhi USCIS . . . yes serious issues with that USCIS office! Hopefully . . . soon!

February - HP application has been rejected AGAIN & we now have to submit new financials (I-134). Please pray - this could be problematic since I am currently unemployed. Through the I-131 supplemental financial application that needs to accompany the I-131 HP application, I have to show adequate financial sponsorship . . . I know there is a way through this, God does have a plan! As of mid Feb, we finally do have an HP application that "sticks" & moves forward to adjudication . . . deep breath & prayers!

Valentine's day is spent with balloons & sweet Gracy loving on her new "pink be-be" (pink teddy bear Mama, Uppa D & Nicky gave her). She loved the bear, valentine cake & candies Papa gave her/us. The adults had a wonderful time & "evening out" at a new restaurant, Des-Per-Des (Live band sang the "Titanic" theme song for me, only song they knew in English, lol!). I watched Nicky & Uppa D open their "Valentines" from Mama via skype.

It is COLD!, but we are making the best of it . . . without heat! Warm blankets & layers! We took a day trip to Murree (Himalayan mountains), a quaint mountain village so Gracy could see the SNOW (her 1st snow!). She loved it, but only wanted to "eat" it! We had a great time, except . . . found out the hard way . . . Gracy gets motion/car sick! A side-of-the-highway "clean up" of little Gracy was required not only once, but twice!

Nicky/Uppa D are in the throws of school, cub scouts & ALL the sports - basketball, pre-season baseball & soccer will start soon! I watch Nicky's games via skype, usually very early in the morning Pakistan time (evening US time).

The "girls" are in Pakistan, the "boys" are in the US - I cannot thank Uppa D enough for ALL that he is doing to keep us "normalized". Without his committed efforts, I simply could not stay here with Gracy. Without Mama . . . Gracy would have to be placed back in orphanage/institutional care until we "can find a way". Leaving her with orphanage caregivers just isn't the "right, best" option. Thank you, Uppa D!

Time for a new PakIstani visa extension for Mama (# 7). When Shelina/Mama make application in person with MOI, I'm told this is my last visa extension . . . based on a new Pakistani visa policy . . . I'm a bit nervous & begin to make tentative plans for a new country "move" with Gracy. I can take Gracy to any other country . . . just not the US! Just which one should we move to . . . is the question?

March - Finally, S.Inhofe's office makes the "call" to New Delhi about our Appeal, it has now been 6 months . . . plenty of time for review. Interestingly enough, immediately after the senator's office makes this call, we receive a denial for the appeal from the New Delhi office. Yes, the very next day . . . question - did ND even review at all? Or, just "stamp" the easy "denial" to satisfy legislative inquiry? We will never know! Anyway, the Appeal has now moved on to the 5th & final review, the AAO (Administrative Appeal's Office) in W,D.C.  This is the dreaded 12+ month wait we were hoping we could avoid, but alas . . . I am very blue. My spirit is waning . . . my strength ebbing . . . I just don't understand the "why"?, but I just have to trust. According to 6 competent, immigration attorneys, MG's case facts absolutely comply with immigration law & intercountry orphan status guidelines; she is definitely an "orphan" & should be granted USCIS "orphan status" classification. BUT, our USCIS officials can't seem to put the "facts" together in the accurate, logical timeline sequence & therefore, she has been denied orphan status classification for an immigrant visa for the 4th time! I know God is bigger than ALL of this!

However, a "Yeah!" on the HP side. We have notice on the HP! I can't believe the quick response time on this! USCIS has responded with a request of 8 additional supplemental items/documents. Some of these are "easy" & some are more "difficult". We are "digging in" & diligently trying to complete these as quickly as we can. We do see this as a "good sign", USCIS is reviewing our application &, Oh, do I dare dream & say it out loud? . . . could USCIS be "considering" our HP case? We can't get this supplemental  "to do" list completed fast enough, but it has to be thorough . . . the HP decision relies on these supplemental documents . . . special needs Home Study Addendum, Medical Treatment Plan, Immigration Plan & more, etc., etc . . . The next 3-4 weeks are a whirlwind getting everything pulled together. Mama taking additional online classes for an updated Home Study, connecting with Tulsa pediatricians for treatment plans, gathering more documents . . . But, inside I'm starting to believe the HP just might be the possible route home . . . :)

April - 4/12/12 the HP supplemental dossier is rec'd by USCIS! I found out the HP review needs to go through 2 different units, the adoption unit & then humanitarian unit. If the adoption unit gives a favorable recommendation, the HP will move on to the humanitarian unit. Maybe a decision within a 2-4 week time frame (could it really be that quick? I'm not getting my hopes up! lol!). Hoping for the best . . . Preparing for the worst! In the meantime, we need to understand if there is anything else we can do during the 12-24 month "wait" for the AAO appeal decision. So, I "dig in", once again, scouring the internet, searching for any kind of case similar to ours that has had a favorable outcome. And, I have found a precedent setting case in India where a US petition for adoption was granted via a teleconferenced US court hearing. This could be our answer . . . we could possibly come through an I-130 "immediate relative" immigrant visa provision instead of the I-600/IR-4 adoption immigrant visa provision. However, since Pakistan does not have a provision for "adoption", we cannot get an in-country, Pakistani adoption decree, but maybe we can get a US adoption decree through an adoption hearing via teleconference? With an adoption decree, I can prove parent/child relationship . . . the I-130 immediate relative immigration provision just might be a possibility. Mama is making contact with the adoptive family in hopes the adoption attorney for the India case will visit & give advice for MG's case. Fingers crossed that this might become a viable option!

We celebrated Marina Grace's "Gotcha Day" on 4/15/12. I actually took physical custody of MG back in January 2011, so the 1 year anniversary was during the time when everyone had such terrible colds! But, we do have several "dates" to choose from for this special day . . . so I have chosen 4/15, the date we received the Certificate of Guardianship & the Pakistani side was finally completed. We had a small gathering here at the guest house & Gracy was all "pretty in pink"! A lovely pink dress that had lots of lace & tulle. She twirled & twirled in her pretty party ddress, until she couldn't twirl anymore!!! We skyped Uppa D/Nicky in so they could enjoy the festivities, too! It was a great day! I simply cannot believe it has been a year . . . but then I look at Gracy & see how much she has grown . . . yes, it has been an amazing year with my beautiful daughter!!!

On 4/19/12 we rec'd an amazing phone call - The USCIS Adoption Unit has recommended a favorable decision & approval for the HP!!! It will now move on to the USCIS Humanitarian Unit . . . I'm on pins-n-needles thinking that THIS may be IT! Maybe, just maybe, the momentum has turned in our favor . . . maybe all the advocacy phone calls from EACH, Both Ends Burning & legislative offices has finally made a "dent" . . . maybe USCIS is finally "hearing" our plea for Gracy's case! It came so very fast & I'm told the humanitarian unit will make a decision within the next 5-10 days . . . so hopefully we will know in a week!

4/26/12 - The USCIS Humanitarian Unit has also approved the HP . . . I am stunned, please pick me up off the floor, yet so very, very thankful!!! We are FINALLY going HOME!!!!

May - What an incredible month! My sister, Mary Jane & nephew, Joel, had planned a visit in May to Pakistan . . . now they will be here for the final days of our stay, as well. My sister MJ was able to go with me to the USE on 5/7/12 to pick up the HP travel document. It was an experience . . . Gracy is the 1st Humanitarian Parole from Pakistan to the US . . . the USE/Islmbd didn't quite know what to do or how to process an HP. After several phone calls & a 4 hour wait at the USE, we finally walked out of the USE for the last time with a travel document for Gracy to enter the US. The USE security guards were, once again, so kind & sweet . . . they all rejoiced with us, as we walked through for the last time! YEAH!!!! :)

I was able to relive the adoption experience with MJ as I  "walked" thru it all again with her . . . I took her to the lower courts & then high court, she met my Pakistani barristers, visited Edhi Home & Dr. Rubina. I also took her to the Ministry of Interior where I pleaded 8 times for a Pakistani visa extension! It was wonderful to share these experiences with her . . . my journey became very "real" to her & I saw the understanding in her eyes with each "stop" along the journey's path. I feel so privileged to be able to share all of this with her!

Joel arrived a week after MJ & we are all now experiencing the sights & sounds of Pakistan. A wonderful day trip to the mountains of Murree, Pakistan (Himalayan mountains). Joel loved seeing the beauty of northern Pakistan. He was shocked (as are most people) at the natural beauty that Pakistan has. No, it is not just "desert"! LOL!

I still have to "pack up" our life here in Pakistan, a somewhat bittersweet task! As I go through our small, little #25 guest house room, I separate "pack", "ship" & "donate" items. Each has such a special memory & I tuck the memories away. I smile, cry & laugh . . . as I relive & remember our "life" here in Pakistan. Wonderful memories to share with Gracy one day! Despite everything . . . I have come to love this country . . . learned to love my daughter's birth place & I can truly say . . . I now understand the culture & country of Pakistan (NO, it is not the awful country everyone thinks it is!). We are leaving Pakistan, but this is not "good by". I have spent "pockets of time" saying farewell to all my dear Pakistani friends.

The hardest farewell of all - leaving New Cape Grace Guest House & the Meghji family - Papa Karim, Sameer & Shelina - Tears fall easily when I think of how much we will miss them. How much a part of our extended family they have become, more than just friends! I watch Gracy with everyone (Papa, Sameer/Shelina & staff), as they teach her "Gracy going to 'merica" & I again tuck special memories in my heart to share with her one day . . . about a special guest house & family, where cultural barriers simply don't exist & global borders are transparent. They lovingly allowed us in their hearts & loved a baby girl . . . just because! The guest house was our "calm, safe harbor" in the midst of the "storm". There are no words to describe my bittersweet feelings about leaving this wonderful, peaceful place that "saved" us!

I will miss all my special friends that I have made here . . . I have very mixed emotions when I think of leaving Pakistan. But . . . we are just leaving, we are not saying "good bye". The friendships & relationships will last a life time. And, in our case . . . the "end does justify the means". Our time spent in Pakistan was well worth our efforts . . . the efforts of doing good are always rewarded!

And, then I look at my sweet Nicholas . . . now 9.5 years old. I have "missed" being with him for 16+ months, almost 1.5 years! I know I'll never be able to get that time back, my heart aches & I grieve over the loss of those days with him, but I do know Marina Grace has needed me here, in Pakistan.

And, yes, I "think" about how my own US gov't has handled or "mishandled" this case in comparison to how Pakistan has handled this case . . . I was placed in such a difficult position . . . no parent should have to "choose" between their children due to "bureaucratic", mismanagement!!! I am just so jaded by our supposed superior US systems that are just so very, very "broken"! But . . . that is a discussion for another day . . . it is now time for rejoicing . . . !

I anxiously look forward to having BOTH my children in my arms . . . at last!!!

So, we are finally Coming Home:) We leave Pakistan early morning, 5/20/12 & will fly back with my sister (MJ) & nephew (Joel) - Amazing how that "worked" out!
Itinerary
1st leg (5/20) - 3.5 hour flight from Islamabad to Dubai
2nd leg (5/20) - 16.5 hour flight from Dubai to Houston, TX
3rd leg (5/20) - 3 hour care drive from Houston to Austin, TX (spend the night)
4th leg (5/21) -  1 hour flight from Austin to Dallas
5th leg (5/21) - 1 hour flight from Dallas to Tulsa  Arrival - Southwest Airlines - Mon, May 21, 2012 05:20 PM

I have had many ask me about "meeting/greeting" us at the airport . . . I say, "Alert the Media! Let's CELEBRATE!"! Everyone who would like to meet & greet us at the airport, "Ajah" ("come on" in Urdu)!!! :)

So . . . We will see you all very SOON!!!

As I take a final blog moment to reflect . . . The question is "Would I do it again?" - there is NO hesitation, absolutely, without a single doubt . . . for these 2 children . . . I would do it all again! I stand in awe of the miraculous stories of my precious children! As I have always said, I am simply their "stepping stone" . . . . from their institutionalized life "here", to their future potential "there" with love & Mama . . . the future is unknown, but we look forward to a precious, wonderful life of Love! Both Nicky & Gracy are pure JOY . . . And, the loves of my life! :)

With a humbled, sincere heart . . . Thank You - for all your encouragement & support . . .

Mama, Nicky & Gracy (& Uppa D)

Pack the Bags, Mama! . . . Pakistan!!!

I can't believe it!
I can't believe it!
I can't believe it!!!

We are going to Pakistan to bring home Sweet Pea!

I recevied additional information last week on Sweet Pea and everything is now a definate green light to move forward with the adoption from Pakistan. Yes, it has all worked out (thank you God! And, thank you LH/GAS!). We are finally GOING, in 1.5 weeks. Yes - you heard it correct - we leave Saturday, 9/19, just 10 days from now.

The 2 dossiers are completed - Court & Embassy !
The Visas are issued !
The Airline Flights are booked !

We will be in Islamabad, Pakistan for around 4 weeks. Our return flight is 10/15. Since we are the pilot family for this program through my agency (Lighthouse Adoptions), we don't know exactly when we will be returning, but around 3-4 weeks should be enough time to get everything processed.

Now for the home front - getting everything ready to go! This is actually a little more overwhelming than all the dossier paper chasing. Nicky is sooo excited about his baby sister. Preparing my little guy for 3.5 weeks without Mama or Uppa D is challenging (more challenging for Mama than for Nicky! LOL!) Oh how I will miss him !!!

But . . . what a blessing we will have - our baby girl - Sweet Pea!

Yippee, Skippee!!!!!

I-171H, "It's finally here!" . . .

The I-171H is finally here. And . . . it is now officially changed to the country of Pakistan! I have all the dossier (both court & embassy) ready to go!

All that is left now is flight & travel arrangements!

Of course there is all the planning for being gone for a month, deciding on a name, shopping & all that goes with scheduling child care for Nicholas . . . LOL! My mantra these days is "Just take one thing at a time!". It will all get done . . . I can handle it ALL!

I'm so excited! Somebody pinch me - am I dreaming? Is this really happening!!!

Court Dossier - FINISHED!

The Court Dossier was electronicly sent to Lighthouse Adoptions (LH) today! Yippee!

The electronic process has not been without the "1st time is the hardest" trial run. We ended up using WinZip to encrypt my files & LH downloaded/installed the WinZip application to open my files. Within a couple of hours, we had it all sent & I think we are finally there. LH will send on to GAS in Pakistan today. Yes, TODAY!

My head is spinning at how very QUICK the process has been with Pakistan. I said YES our sweet baby girl on 7/16/09, just 2 weeks ago!

The key is to be paper-ready with a valid home study & valid I-171H. If you have these 2 key documents, processing can be very quick & travel can be scheduled as soon as . . .

1. Court Dossier is Processed & Court Date is scheduled - with an encrypted electronic dossier & the internet, the court hearing is scheduled within a matter of days once the dossier is received in Pakistan. In fact, GAS has been in contact with LH every day asking "where is the court dossier for family B...?" GAS has been so on top of things, I expect to receive my court date very quickly. There is no translation required since English is the official language of the country. That moves it along even faster!

2. Visas are issued: I applied for my visas at the same time I was completing my dossiers, because the processing time for the visas is about as long as the processing time for the court dossier! We want to be able to schedule travel as quickly as we can, once we receive a court date. The Visa issue date I was given by GAS was 8/15/09. That is only 2 weeks away! Of course, we probably won't travel that quickly since I'm still waiting on the I-171H w/country change.

One thing to note: Pakistan is now issuing only single-entry visas to US citizens. The country entry date can be within 90 days of the visa's issue date. The duration of the stay can be no more than 30 days. According to GAS, the in-country stay for the adoption process is approx ~3-4 weeks, so conservative planning would say 28 days in country. That is cutting it close to the 30 day visa duration limitation, but GAS is saying we can finish within 3 weeks & we should be just fine.

3. I-171H Approval w/country change - Since my previous I-171H was approved for Russia, I had to request, in writing, a country change. I was able to use a "1x free" country change. This hopefully will be approved within a couple of weeks of my written request date (USCIS rec'd Wed - 1.5 more wks to go). Once we have verified that the I-171H has been rec'd in Islamabad, we are good to go on the final major PAP document needed for the adoption! The Embassy Dossier will then be complete with my side (PAP) of it. We will then add the baby's docs to it after the court hearing.

The only documents I'm waiting on are I-171H w/country change & Visa!

If I had been paper-ready for Pakistan, it would have been even quicker! LOL, I don't know if I could have handled that! Seems like I have just "blinked" & we are almost there!

Still working on a Name & trying to figure out what to do about a temp nursery (just not enough time to get her permanent nursery ready before we go!)

I will be officially announcing it at work on Monday. So, then we will need to have a work transition plan since I'll be gone for 4 months in about 3.5 weeks!

We are hoping to have Baby B . . . by 8/28/09 (Yes, just 3.5 weeks away!). She will be 8 weeks old!

And, now to begin the fun of SHOPPING . . . since we need EVERYTHING for a newborn infant . . .

And, reading everything I can on Newborn/Infant care!!! Bottles??? There are just so many options . . . LOL!

Ready - Set - Go! . . . The LAST Dossier!

Yet another dossier pulled together in 1.5 weeks (I believe this is #5)! Hopefully, my LAST!

Whew . . . after today, I think I'm on the tail end of it all, finally. Why is it the people you need professional services from just don't have the same sense of urgency that you do?, LOL! THANK GOODNESS there are only 8 docs w/apostille needed for the Pakistan court dossier (yes, very light compared to a Russian dossier!) But all the major docs are there . . .

So, I thought I would give a brief update on the dossier document requirements for Pakistan. Basically, there are 2 dossiers, a Court Dossier & an Embassy Dossier. I've outlined the documents needed for each.

Court Dossier:
1. Home Study - updated & approved for country change

2. Medical Form – Adoptive parents only, Russian template used
3. Employment Verification - Russian template used
4. Passport Copy - Facing page
5. Marriage Cert/Birth Cert (single parent)
6. Bank Statements
7. Tax Returns (3 years)
8. Letter from Church - explained in further detail below.

Each doc notarized & apostilled. Only 1 original set of court documents needed.

I finalized the home study today! Yeah!!! It has been a few stressful days trying to get all the needed supporting docs pulled together (medicals, financials, employment, etc.), but it was notarized & delivered today. I should receive the last doc tomorrow, my apostilled birth certificate from the state of Colorado. I received the cert w/o an apostille so I had to fedex to CO SOS office yesterday. I won't go into detail about what I had to do to get this expedited. Let's just say . . . "I did what it took to get it done, quickly!!!" The best the CO SOS office could tell me was "at least 3-5 days" (that was yesterday). When I called today, they already had it done & in the fedex overnight mail back to me. Begging, pleading & yes, tears - does help :)

I'll apostille the court dossier on Friday morning. Yes, a drive to OKC to hand carry the documents.

Next, I'll create an electronic dossier - (Yes, this is what Pakistan requires) - You scan in all your final docs & send the electronic dossier to Pakistan. This is then printed in country & used for supporting docs to schedule the court hearing. No translation is required, since Pakistan is an English speaking country. This is the critical dossier since it is what determines when the court hearing can be scheduled, and when travel dates can be finalized. My plan is to have the electronic court dossier completed & sent by this weekend. I'll hand carry the originals court dossier docs & replace the electronic dossier with the originals for the actual court hearing.

Letter from Church (#8) - Document identifying that the PAP is a regular church attendee. Printed on letterhead & signed by church official. Basically, according to Pakistan's adoption requirements, a child must be placed with a christian family when the child is relinquished at a christian orphanage. This document satisfies this requirement.

US Embassy Dossier: (basic Russian document list was used)
1. Visa Fee per child ~$400 US dollars
2. Copies of last three years filed federal tax returns (Notary Statement not required)
3. Income confirmation (I'll be taking my employment verification & a recent pay stub)
Either
- A recent pay stub that shows pay rate, net amount, and year to date amounts
OR
- A recent letter from employer (within last three months, notarized)
OR
- A letter from accountant, attorney, or bookkeeper stating current status, notarized
4. Adoptive Family Assessment/Home study (Notarized)
5. Original or notarized copy of I-171H (in my case updated w/Country Change). I chuckle at my 7/5/09 post. Yes, I am doing a 4th I-171H update & using the 1x free country change, LOL!
- FBI Fingerprint checks must be valid at time of embassy interview
6. Photocopies of applicants’ passports
7. Drivers license or other identification in addition to passport (copy)
8. Photos of each child
- 3 passport size color photos
9. Form I-600
10. Medical information of each adopted child

I have all the embassy dossier docs copied & notarized (where needed) EXCEPT for the I-171H w/country change. Of course, I needed my updated home study w/country change before I could request this. So, the ink was barely dry on my home study, when I sent my written request for the country change via fedex. I contacted the USCIS (Homeland Security) office today to see how long it will take (you know, we basically only have 3 weeks!) to process. H... assured me there wouldn't be any problem with getting it processed. She is an angel!!! And a single adoptive parent herself & we have formed a good relationship with that common experience. She is just so surprised with the country change (there are just not that many Pakistan adoptions).

Of course, Baby B's docs will be added to the embassy dossier after the court hearing.

Only 1 original set of embassy documents needed.

I'll hand carry the embassy dossier too. it is kind of scary to think that I will have all my original dossier documents traveling along with me. I'll not let them out of my sight!!!

Visa
I finished processing both my cousin’s Visa & my Visa on-line this afternoon with the final housing information sent by GAS (Pakistan agency). THAT is when I found out about the additional document required (Swine Flu Clearance) in addition to the original passports & visa pictures. I'm telling you, it was not listed as a requirement yesterday when I filled out the basic accounts. Today, it was listed. I have been online deligently trying to figure out if this is really required or not & if so, what is actually required??? Are test results required? What is the form template the doctor needs to use? Do you notarize it? Do you pay the visa fee prior to the doctor exam? What if you have paid & then you have the SF? I haven't found out much information so far tonight & the service I used for my Visa processing doesn't have technical/doc support after 5:00 p.m. So, if anyone has any tidbit of info on this, pleeeaaassseee let me know. I have to have my Visa by 8/13-15.

Okee-Dokee - there you have the update. I KNOW, a lot to accomplish in just 1.5 weeks, but I have DONE it! Along with a huge project implementation (8/15/09). And, life with my sweet boy. Nicker starts a new school 8/10/09 & so now I need to turn my attention to getting him all lined out with new school uniforms, new backpack & lunch box & school supplies (waiting for the "no sales tax" weekend 8/8-9).

Seems I do some of my best work under stress . . . And, I love to "check" tasks off my "to do" list. But, I also know I'm running on a lot of adrenaline & excitement. The month of August (Nicky's new school, huge project completed . . . and, NEW BABY) it's just so EXCITING!

The Long Awaited NEWS . . .

I don't want to keep you in suspense any longer . . . !!!

Yes, I have a referral . . . a beautiful baby girl! But, surprise, surprise . . . NOT from Russia, from Pakistan! Yes, PAKISTAN!

My head is spinning!

There is so much to do!!! Another dossier (I think this is #5 now) and country change for homestudy & I-171H. My "to do" lists are doubling and tripling before my eyes!

But, first things first, I know you are all waiting for some details on this sweet baby girl . . .

DOB - 6/28/09 (yes, 2.5 weeks old)
weight - 6 lbs
length - 21 inches

How did this all happen, you ask? Our God is the God of Provision and Surprise (as my SW shared with me when I met with her this last week, LOL!)

Pakistan is a new country program for Lighthouse Adoptions, my current IA agency. And, I will be the pilot family for the program. I'm trying not to get to far "out there" since there are definitely "unknowns". But, I do have confidence in my agency and the agency in Pakistan. And, all the decisions have not been made in haste, much thought and prayer have gone into this HUGE decision!

So, where is Russia, you ask? . . . the Russia option is not closed, just put "on hold" until we see if this detour in the adoption journey's path will place my daughter in my arms (I have a very good feeling & I'm thinking it will!).

And some more good news! This could all happen very quickly. We could be in Pakistan by the end of August, just 4 weeks! Only 1 trip, 3-4 weeks is required. I could be home with my baby girl by mid/end of September. Amazing to think that it could happen so quickly.

So, there you have it, the brief "60 second" summary. I'm so very, very excited. And, I will definitely keep everyone updated as we go along this new adoption path. And, please do continue to pray for my little family, as I journey down a path of being "the first". It will be an adventure for sure!

Who would have thought . . . Pakistan! God really does have a sense of humor!

When you least expect IT . . .

Okay, I have SOME news . . . But I cannot publicly share it yet.

So sorry, but I'm needing to ask for Prayers, Prayers, Prayers!!!

My head is spinning!!!

Thanks.

Waiting . . . by 2 month increments . . . Uggghhh!

So, I was supposed to have some "news" of a referral by the end of May. I did get news, but the news was "another possible 1-2 months"! So, I'm thinking, due to my "wait" experience, it will be more like 2 more months.

After a long discussion with my agency (who I really like!) it is apparent that the coordinators are trying their best. I do understand and I do know it is so much more difficult these days. But, now I'm thinking summer slow down and fall court date. Sigh!!!

Over the last 3 years, I have been "2 months" to death. My 2nd adoption life seems to move in 2 month intervals. "it will be 2 months for translation/registration". "It will be at least 2 months between trip 1 & 2." Jul-Sep 2008 - 2 months of heartbreaking referrals. Dec-Jan 2009 - 2 months of holiday wait. It just keeps going on and on and on with the 2 month "thing"! Over the course of 3 years and 3 agencies, I can't tell you how many times I have been told "Nancy, give it a couple more months."

Needless to say . . . I'm a bit Blue this week!
OK, chin up - so now it is "T minus 2 months, again! (minus 1 week!)"

I'm Waiting . . . for my 2nd Wind!

You know, I have ran a 15K several times in my life (yes, I need to start that up again!). My experience has been, I usually start out pretty strong. Along, about the 2K mark, I'm loose, my joints are working, my body has found its rhythm. I'm actually starting to enjoy it!!

Then about the 10K mark, I start to feel my energy going, my feet feel like lead, my lungs are SCREAMING for air! I want to STOP the madness of the race . . . . but my spirit will not let me stop. My spirit pushes me on, forward . . . I have only 5K left!

Then, when I think my body just cannot take any more, I round the last corner and I can finally see the FINISH line. Sometimes it is close, sometimes it is a little bit far off. But . . . HAL-LE-LU-JAH, I can see it!!! Somewhere, deep inside, that visual changes me, the 2nd wind kicks in and it is as if my body instantly rejuvenates itself. Gone are the aches and pains, gone is the breathlessness - a lightness comes over me and I find I can run even faster than before. I finish with such a high, such a rush - I tingle from the top of my head all the way down to the tips of my toes. I finished! It was so worth it!!!

International Adoption is much the same way as my beloved 15K. I have started both of my adoptions out so strong. The paper chase was done with no delays, I was in a rhythm with each document, each notary, each apostille. Then the dossier was completed and sent! That was my 2K mark . . . I was really starting to enjoy the process!

From 2K to 10K, the WAIT. . . It starts out enjoyable, getting the "To Do" list compiled, taking each task and finishing it, working on your little one's room, making decisions with "baby" in mind . . . But, along about the 10K mark (OK, in my case, more like a 26-mile marathon!!!) you reach that point where there just is NOTHING left. You are spent, emotionally and physically. You simply cannot go on another day of WAIT. But . . . go on you do . . . because you keep telling youself you are so close, "you have only 5K left". So, you push through the tears, through the pain.

Then, that magical moment comes and you know the timing is right. You "round the corner and see the finish line", you receive that precious call annoucing you are going to Russia to meet your child. Instantly, the 2nd wind kicks in . . . you know you can "run" another 5K to the finish line.

I'm at the 10K mark . . . my mind is screaming to stop this madness, but my heart is telling me "it is so close, just keep going!" So . . . I'm waiting on that "call" that will rejuvenate me, kick in my "2nd wind" and Sail me into the Finish Line!

And, on the light-side . . . hoping and praying it doesn't turn out that I'm really in a marathon (26 miles) and not just a 15K (9+ miles) . . . Oy, I have never trained for that! LOL!

3 - 3 - 3 - 3 . . . !

Okay, I was checking my blog today & just happened to scroll down to the bottom where the time line tickers are. I got a chuckle out of what I saw . . .

Today is . . . a milestone . . . it has been . . .

3 years
3 months
3 weeks
3 days

. . . since I have started this 2nd adoption from Russia!

After that length of time, you have to find humor in the little things, LOL!!!

Have a blessed day . . .

Hello . . . . It's been a long time :)

So, I'm still here . . . Waiting! I have taken a much needed adoption break over the last few months. I continued to write (after all, it is such good therapy). However, I stopped short of publishing, for a while. Honestly, I needed some time to heal after last year's 2008 disappointments.

But, now . . . I am finally ready to reveal! I have finally taken the leap & posted some emotional posts I have written over the last few months!

I have post dated these to fall in chronological order of the adoption time line. The links are below.

Being Real
OK, Here Is The Scoop
Being Real (Part-2)

I'm lovingly being honest. No one is more committed to adoption, especially international adoption, specifically from Russia! It just takes a great deal of perserverance, patience & flexibility!

I'm BACK . . . I'm STILL HERE, WAITING . . .

Moving Right Along . . .

Such good News!! I found out yesterday, my DOE Dossier was sent to Russia late last week. I completed the apostilles on 2/22/08, sent to AA fed ex on 2/23/08 & AA received it on Monday (2/25/08). Alina (case mgr) processed & added the additional agency documents to complete the dossier very quickly, in fact, the very same week. It was sent to Russia (2/29/08). Whew! what a whirlwind of a week. Thank You, Alina!

So, now I'm waiting for translation and . . . then . . . Region Registration!

My head is spinning on how quickly this has all happened! When I think it has only been 3 weeks since I began the new dossier & 4 weeks since I signed with a new agency, it makes me speechless (those who know me would say "Wow, Nancy speechless!"). To understand this incredible feat, you have to understand within the last month, I have been swamped! I mean, really, out-of-control swamped. Work front - I am currently sitting in a hotel room in Orlando, FL on a business trip. A 2 month project (Feb/Mar) of a system upgrade working with a consultant from Chicago. Home front - Nicky had a staff infection (he is just fine now). I had that awful flu that everyone seems to be having, even though I got a flu shot last fall. Nicky also started soccer last week. So, the last month has challenged this single mama beyond imagination, even without the adoption challenge & saga. Whew!!

A month & the paperwork is back in Russia. Amazing!! The time line is still looking good with approximately 6 months until referral & travel.

Is it too good to be true? . . . I'll keep believing . . .

Can you guess why I put this in PINK!

Good things to come in 2008!

Enduring the "Wait" . . .

I thought - I was even assured - I would have my baby girl this Christmas. She is not here yet. We have no idea when she will be home. No one can really say when, not even my adoption agency. And, wonderful as this time of the year is, I was a bit blue this Christmas season.

I know . . . it is wonderful, that I have a family to share this time of the year with. My sweet little boy, Nicholas, is absolute joy, pure joy. Without him, Christmas would not have the spirit that only a child can bring. I am so very, very thankful for my sweet boy. Just becoming a parent has brightened my Christmas season. I remember that 1st Christmas with Nicholas, so amazing and wonderful. . .

This year, I had beautiful matching Christmas outfits for my children for our Christmas picture card. I had purchased matching Christmas stockings. I even had purchased my daughter’s 1st doll. I tried to move through the season with joy, but I did shed a tear as I packed the beautiful Christmas dress and baby doll away . . . hoping to use it next year?

As wonderful as Christmas was - someone was missing this year.

With my 1st adoption in 2004, I thought the wait would never end. I waited, from beginning to end - 15 months; from “paper pregnant” (dossier completion) - only 10 months. I can say only now. I smile at the memory of so many tears during the agonizing 10 month wait. With this second adoption, I have been waiting - 2 years; from “paper pregnant” - 18 months. It has been a long wait and no real definite end in sight. I’m told maybe by July. Another 7 months! However, it could be anytime. There has been a part of my life that has been on hold for 2 years now!

I think only those that have “waited” through the adoption process can truly understand my melancholy feeling. International Adoption is a process that really tests your ideal of parenthood. The paper pregnancy endurance is not just the 9 month countdown. It is truly not knowing how many months or even years it will be. These days, giving birth through IA is an incredible pregnancy. The not knowing can become so heavy. I envy those that give physical birth – 9 months and it is done! But, that is not what I have been called to do. I have been called to create my family through adoption. I pray daily for strength and stamina.

For those of you that don’t know or understand the world of international adoption - over the past year, regardless of country, there have been extreme delays. Turning 9-12 months of wait into 2-3 years! The recent delays, with Russia’s MOE randomly giving the nod of approval for coveted accreditation to begging U.S. agencies, just add to the stress of this process. The back-n-forth banter of who will be accredited, who will make the grade, who will be approved - create OCD, obsessive compulsive disorders, in any waiting parent. The stress and the emotional weight this creates is HUGE. Imagine, trying to live life while governments decide when you can become a parent. It is such an overwhelming feeling of being out of control in the very basics of life, creating a family. Pre Adoptive Parents can do it for a few months, maybe even a year. But the 2+ years of wait literally add major paperwork-pregnancy weight to your emotional resolve. And, that is only the PAP side.

What about the other side? What happens to the precious children? The ones that slowly age out of the baby houses and children’s orphanages? Will they ever get the opportunity to receive a life-changing forever family? I know I am over simplifying. An objective third-party viewpoint is definately needed to put legal policies and regulations in place for the best interests of both parents and children. After all, we must remember, these children are Russia’s children, not our country’s responsibility. And, sometimes PAP are too close and emotional, wanting their case to be the exception. This pre-adoptive parent (for the 2nd time), is just trying to keep up on all the new information. Just trying to hang on! But, I secretly admit - yes, wanting to be the exception.

For any new PAP reading this, please understand this procreation process of IA is not for the faint of heart. You must be willing to commit to the process, regardless of the wait. Do the homework. I know many that couldn’t bear it and decided IA is not for them. I recommend, eyes wide open, please. But if you, like me, know this is where you are supposed to be and how you are supposed to create your family - the end does justify the means of the “wait”. From my personal experience, I know once you hold that precious child in your arms, the extremeness of the process and the weight disappear. I hang on to that priceless knowledge!

A PAP Mama enduring the “Wait” . . .
